that of Simon Kinberg The 355 is the latest addition to the spy genre, and it certainly offers a lot of entertainment. With its predominantly female cast, the film feels like a refreshing addition to a predominantly male-dominated field. It also ignores the “lonely superspy†trend towards teamwork, something that works wonders for the story.
While not everyone finds the release of Universal Pictures interesting, audiences are sure to enjoy the dialogue. As skilled operatives from different globes attempt to prevent a device that may well bring WWIII into the wrong hands, they make many interesting remarks.
When Mace describes the group’s goal
“We put ourselves in danger, so the others are not. We are the 355.”
CIA Agent Mason “Mace” Browne chooses the most appropriate words to announce his team’s arrival in the world of espionage. They are happy to team up because they want to protect others.
Although the explanation seems a bit cliché, it does make sense. Since each of them is highly skilled, Mace believes they are in a better position than anyone to protect the world. Her statement also shows that she is very proud of the all-female squad which is why she makes sure to repeat the group name.
When Graciela considers quitting
“I have two children. I’m a normal person. I can’t do this anymore.”
Colombian psychologist Graciela is only joining the team because she is in the area as she assesses Luis Rojas’ psyche. As expected, she quickly tires of the chaos and considers quitting.
Graceila’s claim that she is a normal person is not entirely true as she also happens to be an agent of the National Intelligence Directorate (DNI) of Colombia. Spy work is hardly new to her. She’s great at sniffing threats early on, a trait that makes her one of the smartest characters in the world. The 355. Nonetheless, she has every right to consider resigning because her job prevents her from staying too long away from her family. Enemies also target family members, so she feels the need to protect them.
When Mace explains what she needs from the team
“The bad guys are out there right now. You come home, you bring them with you.”
Since all of the team’s spies are from different regions, Mace makes the task clear to them. They should all flush out the baddies from their own backyards.
With the statement, Mace again presents himself as the most suitable leader for the group. She also shows that she fully trusts all agents to get the job done. As someone who has dealt with threats for a long time, she knows the type of antagonists they will be dealing with, but she has no doubts that they will be able to stop them.
When Khadijah reacts to Grady saying that there are four agents in the streets
“I counted six. But thanks for the tip.”
Former MI6 agent and current independent cybersecurity expert Khadijah reacts quickly when Grady informs him that there are four agents outside. She quickly corrects it, specifying that there are actually six.
As a technician, Khadijah has wider eyes than any other member of the team. It’s her job to see what others don’t and she has all the equipment to do so. Her bold reaction is her way of re-emphasizing that she doesn’t need anyone to tell her what’s going on in the areas she’s supposed to be watching. She is normally the first to have such information, which qualifies Khadijah as one of the best specialists in film surveillance.
When we ask Marie if she is in therapy
“I should be.”
Noting how troubled German BND agent Marie Schmidt looks, Graciela asks her if she is seeing a therapist. The veteran agent thinks she should indeed see a psychiatrist.
As one of the oldest spies in The 355, Marie has witnessed many dark times. She even had to bring down her own father, something that really depressed her. Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t give Marie time to get Graciela’s help, as most of the execution time is spent on the larger plot.
When Khadijah reacts to her boyfriend’s complaints
“I’ll be back for dinner tomorrow.”
Khadijah is called on another assignment after returning home, which annoys her boyfriend. He begins to lament but as she doesn’t have time for an explanation, she assures him that she will be back during the day.
It’s a scene that shows how hard it is to do spy work while trying to live a normal life. While it’s all for a good cause, the partners just will never get it. Ultimately it always comes down to the difficult choice between love and work and in tales like this the characters mostly choose work.
When Mary assigns herself a task
“I’ll handle the guns.”
As is the case with all other film crews, each of the spies is assigned a specific task. As for Marie, she specifies that she would like to handle the guns.
Although the German agent first throws a key into Mace’s plan, she soon agrees to shake hands and pursue the same target. She is portrayed as a very capable fighter and so it’s no surprise that she makes it clear that guns will be her duty. And she certainly doesn’t disappoint.
When Larry advises Mace on how to carry out his mission
“Officially, I can’t put you on this. But if you had to go out on your own.”
As Mace is about to leave the CIA to go on a mission, his boss Larry tells him exactly what every boss says in this kind of movie. It’s off the books.
It’s still one more cliché but there is no doubt that The 355 wouldn’t have been as enjoyable as some of the best spy movies of all time without it. This is because the declaration is essentially a formal authorization. Mace and his team are now allowed to break the rules as much as they want without any consequences.
When Nick laughs at Mace
“Always such a tough guy.”
Mace’s colleague Nick turns out to be a traitor as he struggles to hand the doomsday device over to the terrorist. Angry at the way Mace relentlessly tries to stop her, he just laughs at her.
Nick’s words flow from frustration. As a deeply corrupt person, he doesn’t understand why people like Mace go out of their way to do the right thing instead of focusing on their wealth. He’s right that Mace is tough, because that’s something that has been proven over and over again in the movie.
When Mace looks at the names of the people they’re hunting
“They’re like half of the CIA’s most wanted people.”
Mace is elated when she learns the identity of each person they are supposed to take down. This is because most of them are people the agency has been pursuing for a long time.
Mace is especially elated as she is on the verge of solving most of the CIA’s problems when she is not officially on duty for the agency. She’s also happy that she takes most of the credit for herself, which means that once she gets back to work, her status will have exploded. It turns out to be a not-so-easy task, but she succeeds.
