Here are quotes from championship coverage on NBC and Peacock, and post-round coverage on In live from on GOLF Channel and Peacock.

ON CAMERON SMITH (20-under, Champion)

Cameron Smith to Mike Tirico on his biggest shot of the day“Probably that putt on 17. Getting up there a few strokes ahead and then hitting the drive that I did on 18 was pretty good… When the driver feels good, I feel like that’s where my game is in a good place, and when the putts come, that’s where I’m in contention.

Paul Azinger“If anyone other than Rory was going to win, they were going to have to be kind of a spoiler. It had to feel like 95% of the people here were shooting for one man. That’s something to get over. Jack had to overcome it against Arnold I mean, that’s part of it Anyone trying to beat Tiger in stride would have to face the crowd too Cam Smith did that today and boy he’s got a lot of heart, a lot of bravery.

Brandel Chamblee on Live from the Open“I don’t remember ever seeing anyone birdie five in a row en route to a major championship… the last time Cameron Smith birdied five in a row – just to show you how much he it’s rare for anyone to do that, let alone Cameron Smith – it was November 2015 when he came out of it and chased and finished 37e. We just witnessed the lowest final score of anyone to win an open championship at St. Andrews. It’s a comeback for the ages…one of the greatest comeback rides we’ve ever seen in major league history.

azinger“We now know who the best pressure putter in the game is. Cameron Smith – no doubt about that. He proved it to the world. THE PLAYERS Championship was just an amazing display, but what about that…what a way to end.

Dan Hicks“Just like he did at THE PLAYERS, Cam Smith presented a putter of historical significance…the story of the day and the story of the week was that hot putter.”

azinger“Twenty-five putts this week. And only one three-putt.

Hicks: We have another mullet who won the St. Andrews Open – John Daly did it 27 years ago.

Azinger after a fifth consecutive birdie on the 14the hole to take the head“We knew the fireworks were coming after we hit that ninth hole…but he set them all off at once.”

Marc Rolfing: “The second shot he fired in the 16e hole here might be the best shot he’s hit all day. Really a quality shot.

ON RORY MCILROY (18, 3rd square)

azinger: “It’s hard to win a championship with 13 clubs in your bag. That’s what Rory had to do today. He had two putts on every green today… he finished 59e on the field at putting. Rory hit 18 greens in regulation time. He beat Victor Hovland by four strokes and did not win this tournament. Cam Smith took it from him, and in fact, Cam Young too. Cam Smith had nine fewer putts for the week than Rory McIlroy.

Hicks on McIlroy“Of all those near-misses we talked about, can there be one that stings more than that? I would say absolutely not.

Jaime Diaz on McIlroy on In live from: “I think being a great player and getting up there a lot means you have to deal with heartache sometimes. Sometimes you just get beat up, and yeah, he could have done more. He didn’t not birdie in the birdie holes… But all of those things are part of having to be resilient and I think Rory is going to come out of it saying, ‘I got better with the putter, I got better with the wedge and I can be proud of what I’ve done.’ But that still wasn’t quite enough, he still has room to improve But that’s what happens…a good putter does that to people and Cam Smith is probably in our game right now the best putter, especially the clutch, and the most capable guy at what he was doing today.

Chambered on In live from“It was almost like Rory thought it was a two-horse race…he had a good eye on Viktor Hovland and Hovland didn’t birdie on the front nine…it seemed to me like Rory knew that he was going to be able to make a few easy birdies in the round and if he did nothing or made big mistakes it would be almost impossible for anyone to come back from behind and catch him Well what Cameron Smith did is almost impossible to predict.

McIlroy to Kathryn Tappen on his thoughts leaving the 18e hole: “Just disappointment I guess. I had a great opportunity today to add to that major tally and I didn’t quite make it. I didn’t feel like I was in pain acted but the putter kind of cooled me off throughout the round I did what I wanted to do I played a very controlled round of golf I didn’t take advantage of some of the holes including I had taken advantage this week and when both Camerons, but especially Cam Smith, made that run in the back nine, I really had to try to dig deep to make some birdies and I just couldn’t. so got beaten by the best player this week. Going to shoot 64 to win an open championship at St. Andrews is a hell of a performance and hats off to Cam. He had an incredible week.

McIlroy to Tappen on his takeaways this week“Just that I know I can do it. I love this golf course, I play well here. The last two Opens I’ve played here, I’ve finished third both times and it’s coming. I think this whole major season — second at Augusta, third here, fifth at the US Open, eighth at the PGA — I’ve been knocking on the door. I just have to be patient, keep knocking on the door and eventually it will be opened to me again.

Azinger after his par of 14e hole“Part of the whole process here is dealing with par 5s. He let this one slip through his fingers.

David Feherty after his missed birdie on the 16the hole“He played beautifully today. He just wasn’t able to do anything. He will have to wonder if he played too carefully at the start of the round.

Tiger Woods’ advice for McIlroy and Hovland in the final round at St. Andrews, as texted to John Wood“I texted the master last night, Tiger, to see what he would think before that last round. He was kind enough to respond and he said this: ‘If I shot 19 under par, that Who would tie the lowest score to par in all four major tournaments, I would win. How do I do that? No bunkers. No three putts. Take care of the driveable par-4s and take care of the par-4s. -5. Maybe sneak in one or two more. And voila, a score of around 68 without doing anything special.’”
