WOMEN’S BASKETBALL POSTMATCH QUOTES
KENTUCKY VS. VANDERBILT
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2022
MEMORIAL COLISEUM – LEXINGTON, KY.
Kentucky head coach Kyra Elzy
By getting more Jazmine Massengill in the field…
“Well, it’s been a journey and there’s continuous progress, but I think she’s giving more as you saw tonight. She pushed the ball in transition. She ‘gets into position’ and plays extremely strong defensively, but nine assists, turnover with 10 points, we asked him to step in and score, to get involved in our attack and that forces the defense to play us honestly.
On the team that wanted more in recent games…
“We want it more, and that’s fine. We’re just saying when we put our foot on the ground, we have to put it there. We have to give everything we have. Let’s play with energy and intensity. let’s feed on each other’s emotion I thought we had a run in the third and you could just see the energy from the bench, the energy from the people on the field, and that’s how we have to play to succeed.”
On turnovers in the first 14 possessions…
“At first, I thought we were causal with the basketball. We talked in the shootouts that we had to make hard flashes in the middle, meet the pass. I thought we took it on the sideline, and that It’s an easy place to get trapped just across the pitch, which is just a dangerous spot, so I think we turned it around three or four times When we brought the ball into the middle ground and that we could attack, we made big shots.
On what Dre’una Edward does well…
“She finishes around the rim, so she does it well. But the other thing, Dre [Dre’una Edwards] is so versatile. We could put it in the middle of the floor, you saw it today, she took it from the window. She’s smarter because she doesn’t crush people. We talked to him, “if you see someone with a different color jersey, don’t run over them.” In fact, she tackles painting. She gave one to Jada today – so she could have them sucked and kicked out. But her versatility, she can pull the jumper 15 feet, so she makes us different.

Coming off the bench and rocking his team…
“I like it, but honestly it doesn’t matter to me. It’s more about how we finish the game than how we started. So we just have to go and pursue it. That’s what I’m here to do.”
On a solid finish against Vanderbilt…
“It was good, we just got together and said it’s time to play, we have to win this game.”
On how well Jazmine distributed the ball to the rest of the team…
“It’s amazing when you have a playmaker and you get a lot more assists and turnovers. So that’s a great aspect to have in the team. We have a great PG here.”
Reflecting the number of rotations…
“Just by locking ourselves in, we know what we have to do. We knew they were going to be physical and trap with everything else. We just had to slow down and play our game.”

By taking on Coach Elzy’s challenge to get more involved…
“It was tough. She told me I had more in me, it made me want to dig deeper and take on the challenge. Her toughness with me made me grow and uplift me as a than a leader.”
On how she translates to working harder in games…
“I just had to be more intentional both in attack and defense, and just know what she’s looking for. I learned and watched movies. It’s just about being intentional in all aspects of the game, making sure I keep the intensity going for the 40 minutes.”
Have all the players ready to play…
“Having six players is tough. It’s a bit exhausting. I’m glad our whole team is back. It’s definitely a different feeling. We rest more, get more reps with everything. is definitely better than just playing with six people.”
