Friends has a number of romantic stories and moments, most of which have become iconic. There are moments between Ross and Rachel, Chandler and Monica, and even Joey, Phoebe and their respective partners. This is definitely one of the best quotes from Phoebe Buffay, and it comes during one of the most romantic moments in the entire series. Prior to this episode, it looks like Ross and Rachel may never get together, but that changes when Rachel sees how Ross tried to take her to her high school prom.
Phoebe says a version of this quote earlier in the episode to convince Ross how he and Rachel are meant to be together. And so when the couple kiss, Phoebe repeats the quote to remind everyone how she was right. This quote has now become a feature of relationship sayings and can be found on many Friends valentine’s merch and cards.
Ross – “The one with Rachel’s sister”
“I don’t know if something is going to happen between us again, but I don’t want to think that nothing ever can.”
Even when Ross and Rachel aren’t a couple, it’s clear that they still care about each other. So when Ross has a date with Rachel’s sister Jill, Rachel is clearly unhappy with it. He finally tells Ross how uncomfortable it makes her, and despite Jill trying to kiss him, Ross breaks up with her to appease Rachel’s wishes.
Ross admits that the reason he broke up was because he feared Jill would prevent him from having a relationship with Rachel again, and it was a situation he never wanted. He’s clearly hanging on to his feelings for Rachel, showing how the two are meant to be together.
Rachel – “The one where Ross and Rachel … you know”
“You were worth the wait. And I’m not just thinking about tonight.”
Ross and Rachel had many romantic moments, and this was definitely one of them. When the couple try to consummate the relationship for the first time, it takes a while for them to feel comfortable. However, when Ross takes Rachel to her museum’s planetarium after being held up at work, they admit how much they care about each other.
Ross apologizes for making Rachel wait for the date to begin, but Rachel says it was worth it. And by that, she also means that it was well worth the ten years of waiting it took for the couple to eventually get together. Overall, it feels like a highlight between the pair, and it’s a very romantic quote.
Phoebe – “The One With Phoebe’s Wedding”
“You are my family.”
Phoebe is a very tragic character. After losing all of her parents and living alone on the streets for several years, it is heartwarming to see her finally find someone to settle down with. During her wedding vows, she tells Mike that he gave her a family, which she always wanted but never had growing up.
Mike was a supporting character with a main character energy, hence he became Pheobe’s husband. It’s wonderful that Phoebe found someone who can match her eccentric energy, and the fact that he chose to marry her even though marriage wasn’t her thing shows the couple were here for the long haul. .
Chandler – “The one with the joke”
“You need high maintenance, and that’s okay because I like to maintain you. “
While Monica and Chandler initially didn’t seem like they wanted to get together, they ended up making the perfect couple. Their relationship worked because they were able to balance each other’s whims; Monica’s need to get married balanced out Chandler’s fear of engagement, and Chandler’s awkwardness eased Monica’s obsessive need to keep things organized.
So when Monica is labeled high maintenance, she is insulted, but Chandler comforts her by telling her that it’s okay, because he loves being able to balance her. Chandler isn’t generally known for his romantic and serious quotes, so this moment is really special for the couple.
Joey – “The one where Ross is doing well”
“I’m crazy about her.”
While Rachel and Joey’s relationship wasn’t very popular with fans of the show, it was nice to see Joey being fully engaged for once. When Ross sees the couple kissing, he’s panicked enough, but ends up giving them his blessing when Joey admits how much he cares for Rachel by saying the aforementioned quote.
Whether their relationship was or not, Joey and Rachel were really sweet to each other, and clearly they cared for each other. Joey’s quote proves it, as he’s not usually the romantic type, so the fact that he’s so crazy about Rachel shows that their brief relationship was something special.
Chandler – “The One With The Proposal”
“You make me happier than I thought, and if you let me, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to make you feel the same way.”
Getting over his engagement issues for Monica is possibly one of the best decisions Chandler has ever made for himself, and this moment proves it. By proposing to Monica, he admits how she made him happier than he ever thought, and his promise to make her happy in return proves his dedication to her.
The fact that they both cry during this quote makes it all the more beautiful. The whole episode centers around their proposal to each other, and after the couple have been together for two years, finally seeing them get engaged is an incredible sight to watch.
Monica – “The one with Chandler and Monica’s wedding”
“Here we are with our future ahead of us, and I just want to spend it with you. My prince, my soul mate, my friend.”
Monica and Chandler’s wedding was not without its fair share of hiccups, including Chandler who ran away, but eventually the ceremony takes place, and it’s very romantic. This is especially true during vows. Monica explains how she wants to spend the rest of her life with the person she cares about the most, Chandler, and it’s hard to hear the quote without crying.
What makes the couple’s relationship so strong is that they were first friends, and this is shown by the last word of Monica’s quote. He’s her husband now, but he’s still her best friend, which makes their partnership all the more meaningful.
Rachel – “The last one”
“I got off the plane.”
After a decade of will-they-won’t-they-they, Ross and Rachel finally reunite for good in the show’s final episode. It happens after Ross asks Rachel not to work in Paris, right before she gets on the plane. Rachel pushes him away first, but Ross then hears on the phone that she’s decided she wants to be with him. She appears at her door and says she got off the plane.
While some fans believe Rachel should have made it to Paris, there’s no denying that this is the iconic highlight of the show’s longest-standing relationship. It really shows Rachel’s dedication to Ross, as she just couldn’t live without him.
