Navratri is a Hindu festival that begins today, October 7, 2021. Everyone is filled with joy and happiness during the nine days of the festival. Navratri means “good triumphs over evil” and therefore everyone pays special attention to this festival.

Beginning in the fall, this festival also commemorates the victory of the goddess Maa Durga over the demon Mahishasur, allowing the nation to be freed from all evil. The nine days would be devoted to the “nine avatars” of Maa Durga, according to Hindu mythology. “Vijayadashami” or “Dussehra” is the last day of the festival where Maa Durga is said to leave Earth and return to Heaven.

History and celebrations of Navratri

Each year in the fall, Navaratri is observed for nine nights (ten days). It is observed and celebrated differently in different sections of Indian culture for various reasons. The celebration takes place in the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashvin. It is September and October in the Gregorian calendar. The worship of nine goddesses in nine days, the stage decorations, the telling of the legend, the staging of the script and the chanting of the Hindu scriptures are all part of the festivities.

The nine days also have competitions for the design and staging of pandals, family visits to these pandals, and public celebrations of Hindu classical and folk dances. Fasting is a common way for Hindu devotees to commemorate Navaratri. The statues are either submerged in a body of water like a river or the ocean on the last day, or the statue symbolizing evil is burned with fireworks, symbolizing the end of evil. The celebration also kicks off the countdown to Diwali, the festival of lights, which takes place twenty days after Vijayadashami.
