Amsterdam – Our Exclusive selection The campaigns continued to be popular, which is why the Books and Mapping Department is pleased to participate in the October edition of this event. We have expanded our offer this month, but adding a French literature auction to the list.
Offered as a single lot in our art and photography book auction, three of the rarest issues of Behind the Mirror dedicated to the work of Marc Chagall. These contain a total of 11 original lithographs by Chagall, a must-have in any collection of contemporary art.
A highlight of our exclusive book and map auction are the three first edition volumes of Vallisneri’s Opera Fisico Mediche from 1733. With 97 plates of animals and human and sea monsters, this extravagant work cannot fail to impress. Equally impressive is the fabulous binding by Frédéric Masson & Édouard Detaille Napoleon’s Horsemen first edition of 1895. One of only 75 copies on Japanese paper, with numerous illustrations by Detaille, the binding is by one of the most important bookbinders of the Belle Epoque, Charles Meunier.
For map lovers we are pleased to offer this fine example by Johannes Blaeu Prout Britannia from the 17th century, with attractive Dutch miniatures on panels either side of the map.
One of the highlights of our new exclusive French Literature is this excellent copy by Ludovic Baschet Contemporary Literary and Artistic Gallery with an original photograph of Baudelaire. This is complete with all 13 issues produced between 1876 and 1884
Our offer for the exclusive selection is completed by our exclusive auction of autographs and manuscripts. We open with this beautiful manuscript on Medicine by A. Villanova from 1864. This interesting pharmacological manuscript includes instructions on how to prepare opium and belladonna, as well as other medicines and poisons, with a nice hand-colored illustration of the tools used in pharmacy .
Finally, for our American readers, we include this lovely photograph from Laurel & Hardy, signed by Stan Laurel.
