The mayor doesn’t like it, but the city is no longer stopping people with legal weapon permits from carrying their weapons into Hartsfield-Jackson airport.

“The fact of the matter is, we’re complying with state law, so it’s not something where we had a choice,” said Mayor Kasim Reed.

Absolutely amazing. HB89 a couple of years ago, along with last year’s SB308, said that legal firearm carry on all public transportation is OK in Georgia. But Hartsfield Airport, along with tons of Atlanta’s political elites, have said that Hartsfield is “different” and “above the law” and said they would arrest anyone with a firearm in the non-secure areas of Hartsfield regardless of state law.

ATL Mayor Kasim Reed’s legal team must have told him that if he continued the abuse of state law that an expensive lawsuit would soon arrive.

I will NOT test ATL’s mood just yet. I will NOT openly carry a firearm at Hartsfield for awhile. I don’t trust that a cop won’t taser me and claim he “forget” firearm carry is now allowed. Maybe in a couple of months when the media storm has died down. But I WILL be concealed carrying.

Atlanta’s gun free zones are not free of guns or violent crime.

Georgia has one of the toughest laws in the country when it comes to banning guns from school property. The law creates what it calls the “school safety zone,” an area of 1,000 feet surrounding any school, including universities and adult technical schools, where it is a felony punishable by ten years in prison to possess a firearm or other weapon. So why do armed and violent criminals keep striking near Georgia schools?

In just the last couple of weeks, Atlanta’s prominent engineering university, Georgia Tech, has experienced five robberies of its students, who are disarmed by law within 1,000 feet of campus.

In the first four incidents, Georgia’s draconian “school safety zone” law did not deter the robbers from using firearms to commit their crimes.

Georgia Tech is not the only campus recently to experience violence at the hand of armed criminals. The month of March also saw the shooting of a pregnant woman at Savannah Tech. Obviously, the current approach of pretending that one more law is going to stop criminals from carrying guns is not working.

Utah, by contrast, has very few armed crimes on its college campuses and, in spite of a state law overriding college gun ban policies, has yet to experience a single accident, gun crime, or gun theft from an armed student or faculty member. Utah’s current approach seems to be working.

Several states are re-examining their school gun bans, and Georgia is one of them. Rep. Timothy Bearden (R-68) introduced HB 615 this year, which would, among other things, repeal the felony “school safety zone” law as it applies to holders of Georgia firearms licenses. HB 615 has about 40 co-sponsors and is expected to pass in 2010, the second year of the legislative session.

Thousands of Atlanta residents have received an email warning from a police major about rising, violent crime in Zone 5, which includes neighborhoods in downtown and midtown.

Major Khirus Williams sent out the alert after a string of robberies and carjackings Monday night.

Here is some of what he wrote:

“Please, let us all keep our exterior lights on to illuminate the area. This makes the area unpopular for criminals!

“Also, please have your family, friends, and neighbors to blow their horn when arriving. This allows us to watch for them until they arrive, inside, safely. Open the window dressings and hi-light them with a flash-light. Thus, the criminal element would be aware that someone is watching!

“Furthermore, we have to minimize just visiting in the drive way, or sidewalks, at nights. I know that this is unfair, but the criminals are becoming more brazen and this is their method of attack.. Patrols throughout the City are not as common as they were in the past, as a result of furloughs.

“In closing, we have to do things differently than we did in the past, until there is a change. Please, let us minimize the opportunity for us to become victims and assist others as they return home. ”

Mr. Williams say 2 to 5 men wearing hoodies that cover their faces are armed with guns and approaching people even when they’re in groups and in lighted areas.

He also specifically references the current furloughs in the police department, which have cut patrols by 10% across the board.

“Right now, I feel like one of the most constructive things we can do is be completely honest with citizens about what they’re up against and admit that police presence won’t always be what it has been in the past,” said Mr. Williams.

So to combat rampant, out-of-control crime in Atlanta a police officer advised potential victims to blow their car horn, and shine a light in your friend’s face, and hide in fear in our homes? What an absolutely pitiful mound of helpless drivel.

What do you expect? Unemployment is up. Crime goes up. Obviously do not depend on Atlanta Police to protect you. You must learn to take care of yourself and family. The only thing I need the cops for is to write a report about the dead perp and haul the body away.

What does it say when even the cops admit that they’ve lost control and cannot be depended on to protect the citizens?

And what does it say about us if we only rely on the government, instead of ourselves, to protect us?

An Atlanta police recruit shot and killed a teen boy who tried to rob him at gunpoint early Saturday [Feb. 9], authorities said.

The 14-year-old allegedly had confronted the recruit while he was in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Parkside Crossing apartments.

Forest Park police Lt. Amy Wright said the teen suffered more than one gunshot wound and died.

Wright also did not release the name or age of the police recruit, but she described him as a younger officer who recently got out of the U.S. Marine Corps, is attending Atlanta’s police academy and lives at Parkside Crossing.

The shooting occurred at 12:15 a.m. The recruit was sitting in his personal vehicle, logged onto his laptop computer because the apartment complex offers free wireless Internet service, Wright said.

He heard a tap on his driver’s side window and looked up to see the boy standing outside his car. The youth allegedly had a shotgun pointed at the recruit’s face.

The boy said something the man did not understand, but the recruit believed the teen wanted his laptop, Wright said.

The recruit could not roll down his window because it was broken, so he began opening the door, she said. As he stood up, he grabbed a handgun that he had at his side and used the laptop to hide the weapon.

The recruit then opened fire on the robber, killing him, Wright said. The would-be victim spotted a second male nearby who apparently was a lookout. That individual ran away and was being sought by police Saturday evening.

Forest Park police found a set of keys on the dead boy for a vehicle that was parked outside the gated complex. The car had been stolen from East Point, Wright said.

The shooting appeared to be in self-defense and no charges were pending against the police recruit, Wright said.

The moral of the story is don’t point a gun at someone if you don’t want to risk being shot by them.

The recruit recently got out of the U.S. Marine Corps. Those guys don’t know how to miss.

The punk was driving around in a stolen vehicle as well. What a loser. But we’re not through with the story just yet:

The 14-year-old boy who was killed when he tried to rob an Atlanta police recruit with a shotgun this weekend also was being sought by police in DeKalb County for an armed robbery at a synagogue.

DeKalb County police were searching for Demario Jackson of Atlanta for allegedly breaking into Ner Hamizrah Synagogue on Lavista Road with a friend Jan. 31 and robbing a congregation member at gunpoint, said Mikki Jones, spokeswoman for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

So now we know the name of the punk – the dead punk – is Demario Jackson, a 14-year-old boy driving around in a stolen car and wanted on armed robbery of a synagogue congregation member. Demario, you are today’s poster child for why I carry a concealed weapon every time I leave my house.

We’ll probably hear Demario’s family spin this until it’s reported that he was an Eagle Scout, rescued abandoned puppies, taught a class on compassion and forgiveness at a local bible college and was comforting a friend in that apartment complex when he stopped to ask directions and was viciously gunned down and had the keys to a stolen car planted on him.

Bah. He was a punk, a seasoned criminal-in-training, and I’m glad this animal was put down before he could harm one of my family.

A 19-year-old man was shot outside of McNair High School in Dekalb County on Friday [Feb. 8] night, while a high school basketball game was going on inside.

Hundreds of kids were pouring out of the school just after the basketball game when the shooting occurred.

DeKalb police are looking for the shooter and trying to figure out what started it all. The shooting happened at about 8:45 p.m., just off McNair High School’s campus.

Investigators said a 19-year-old victim was waiting at a bus stop on Bouldercrest Road.

And just a few days later, again from 11Alive.com:

A 15-year-old McNair High School student was shot in the back at a MARTA bus stop just outside the school on Tuesday [Feb. 12] afternoon.

Investigators said they are looking at the possibility that Tuesday’s shooting and one that happened last Friday night are related — they occurred in the exact same place: the MARTA bus stop just off of McNair’s campus.

The teen was shot at about 3:15 p.m., just after classes dismissed for the day at McNair.

One person shot after a high school basketball game while standing at a bus stop, and then four days later another person was shot in the middle of the afternoon at the same bus stop.

How can this be? First Georgia has the School Safety Zones law. “School safety zone” means in, on, or within 1,000 feet of any real property owned by or leased to any public or private elementary school, secondary school, or school board and used for elementary or secondary education and in, on, or within 1,000 feet of the campus of any public or private technical school, vocational school, college, university, or institution of post secondary education. It’s against the law to have a gun inside of these school safety zones.

Second, it’s illegal to have a gun at a bus stop. Any person who boards or attempts to board an aircraft, bus, or rail vehicle with any explosive, destructive device, or hoax device as such term is defined in Code Section 16-7-80 shall be guilty of a felony. This gun-free zone also includes a reasonable area immediately adjacent to any designated stop along the route traveled by any coach or rail vehicle operated by a transportation company or governmental entity operating aircraft, bus, or rail vehicle transportation facility and parking lots or parking areas adjacent to a terminal – and by “adjacent” Georgia law can mean up to 200 yards from the actual bus stop.

So either using the “school safety zone” laws OR the “bus stop safety zone” laws it’s illegal to have a gun at the location where these two people were shot. These two people were in a “double” gun free zone.

• Did this zone protect the victims?
• Did this zone keep guns away?
• Did this zone prevent a gun crime?
• Did the establishment of a gun free zone have any impact at all?

Gun free zones are attractive to criminals because no law abiding citizens will be able to stop them from taking hostages or killing. Criminals have great incentive to do their crimes within gun free zones. Gun free zones are the safest places for criminals. Gun free zones are the deadliest places for law-abiding citizens. Gun free zones increase gun crime. When well meaning but misguided individuals ban guns at one location or another they are recklessly and negligently putting your life at risk and are giving you a false sense of security.

What gun-control advocates fail to grasp is criminals, by definition, do not follow the law and therefore any attempt to keep them from carrying a gun into a given establishment will fail, often with tragic results.

The goal of legislators nationwide shouldn’t be to keep armed law-abiding citizens from bearing arms in restaurants, bars, schools and so forth. It should be to keep criminals with guns from entering such locations. Posting signs designating an area as “gun free” does not keep criminals from entering with a gun; they invite criminals who know nobody can stop them, and that is exactly what the criminals want.
