Big-box, home-improvement stores in Los Angeles will have to set aside space for day laborers under an ordinance passed by the City Council on Wednesday.

When the ordinance takes effect — the mayor has to sign it, and most city laws take effect 30 days afterward — it will apply to stores such as The Home Depot that have 100,000 square feet or more, or any structure where 250,000 square feet or more of warehouse floor area is added.

The shelters must be easily accessible and include drinking water, bathrooms, tables, seating and trashcans. The stores may be required to work with Los Angeles police in developing a security plan, according to the unanimous vote by the 15-member lawmaking body.

People who live near Home Depot stores have complained of day laborers drinking beer, urinating in yards or other unseemly behavior.

“It provides for safe and dignified hiring locations where contingent workers can defend their basic rights,” said the group’s executive director, Pablo Alvarado.

Yo Pablo, exactly what would be the “basic rights” of someone that shouldn’t even be in this country? When the first action by these day laborers is to violate US laws and sovereignty, why should Home Depot’s first action be to provide porta-potties and free water? Instead why can’t Home Depot use the heads of these illegals to scrub out the porta-potties?

A US-based company, guilty of no crime, is now being forced against its will by the government to provide comfort to someone that is not a US citizen, that is not hanging around their parking lots illegally, that harm the US economy, and have childcare and healthcare that are subsidized by US taxpayers.

Asinine.

You want to solve this invasion of the US? Instead of allowing them to hang around Home Depot why don’t we ship these illegals to the local shooting range for the purpose of holding the targets? Them and the people that hire them too.

The question of whether to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants ignited a national debate in the United States. But in Mexico, the largest source of U.S. immigrants, there’s no question: Here, you must be a legal resident to get a driver’s license.

All of Mexico’s 31 states, along with Mexico City, require foreigners to present a valid visa if they want a driver’s license, according to a survey of states by The Arizona Republic.

“When it comes to foreigners, we’re a little more strict here,” said Alejandro Ruíz, director of education at the Mexican Automobile Association.

Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington allow drivers to get licenses without proving they are legal residents, according to the National Immigration Law Center.

“The fact that all 31 states in Mexico would have such a common-sense position . . . shows to me a certain hypocrisy on the part of the Mexican government, because they are constantly criticizing those of us in Congress who want immigration laws to be tougher up here,” said US Representative Peter King (R-NY).

Hypocrisy on the part of the Mexican government, and appeasement on the part of so many in the US government.

By voting this bill down or substituting an “enforcement-only” bill as an amendment, you could prevent the destruction of our great nation. You can save our language, culture and American way of life for future generations.

Passage of the Kennedy-Bush amnesty could cause many elected officials to be voted out of office. But, sadly, it would be too late for America. Save America!

Here is a chance to do some good. Put patriotism ahead of petty politics. Vote against any and all bills that seek to combine enforcement and amnesty. Eighty percent of your constituents will respect you for your actions.

Pass an enforcement-only bill now, give it time to succeed, and you will find it much easier to pass an amnesty for any illegal aliens still residing in the U.S.

For those of us out here who really do have a moderate position on immigration, who really do seek a reasoned approach that in the long run allows for some form of “guest workers,” the immigration bill being considered by the Senate is more and more of an affront the more and more its details become clear. It is an affront because it appears to have been written in bad faith, by illegitimate procedures, with all sorts of smoke screens meant to snooker us into believing the bill is moderate and balanced.

In fact, the bill is a radical and dangerous attempt to open the floodgates. It must be stopped.

For weeks, Americans were told that there are only two options for dealing with the nation’s illegal immigration problem: stay with the status quo or accept a “grand bargain”–a tenuous behind-closed-doors deal, first made public by The Heritage Foundation, which contained nearly 800 pages of flawed policies. In the face of overwhelming criticism from all sides, this legislation was withdrawn from the Senate.

Now, an altogether new bill (S. 1639) has been introduced by Senators Ted Kennedy and Arlen Specter. It seems to incorporate the previous bad legislation, with some meaningless amendments.

Yes, what started out BAD has only gotten WORSE.

This bill was conceived, in secret, by a dozen open-border advocates without even the benefit of the committee process. Like all the failures of the past, it creates the illusion that it will accomplish both enforcement and amnesty simultaneously, while its true purpose is amnesty for uncounted tens of millions.

The real solution to our immigration problems is enforcement. We need a few high-profile cases, where company CEOs who hire illegals are thrown into jail and fined millions of dollars. That will dry up the job market. And without jobs, many illegal aliens will simply go home. No muss. No fuss.

If the government were able (and willing) to create working versions of an employee eligibility verification system and a visa entry-exit system, our immigration problem will vanish very quickly and permanently.

That our government has failed to take these simple steps points to the real intent of our elected officials – and what we can expect from the Bush-Kennedy amnesty plan.

Why are you even debating a bill whose formula is a proven failure? Don’t you care about our national security or our nation’s sovereignty? Don’t you think we have enough problems in this country without importing 200 million more problems? Don’t you worry that our Social Security trust fund will go bankrupt overnight when all of these people begin to line up for benefits?

In a sharp rebuke to President Bush, House Republicans unveiled legislation Tuesday that would bar illegal immigrants from gaining legal status in the U.S., require tamper-proof birth certificates for Americans and make English the nation’s official language.

The measure’s core principles include gaining control of the border and enforcing existing immigration laws. It does not provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, as the Bush plan does.

The House bill stands virtually no chance of becoming law, or even advancing, in the Democratic-controlled Congress. Still, it casts in bold relief the split between Bush and Conservatives in the immigration debate.

Have you reviewed the statistics concerning the behavior of the illegal aliens who are here already? It might give you a good idea of about who you are planning to let in.

Specifically, have you read the crime statistics: the number of felons per 1,000 illegal aliens; the number of pedophiles, rapists, drunken drivers, murderers, identity thieves and drug smugglers, whose numbers are now clogging our prison system to overflowing!

I understand that the bill plans to weed out all of these criminals and, I presume, terrorists during the 24-hour period allocated for a background check. Twenty-four hours?

How could the bill’s authors allocate only 24 hours to determine whether the applicant has a criminal record, either here or in Mexico, has a deportation order, owes back taxes, has stolen Social Security numbers, has TB, is dodging DWI violations or child-molestation charges?

Be honest! Our government can’t even do easy stuff in 24 hours. How could they vote for a bill that claims to be able to do something as important and as difficult as a thorough background check on a foreign national in 24 hours?

First of all, according to U.S .Border Control (www.usbc.org), which has done exhaustive research, it’s 20 million illegal aliens, not 12 million.

And, it appears that this bill would allow these 20 million to bring in their immediate family members – parents, children, brothers and sisters, and, of course, a spouse. This means that, at a bare minimum, it is necessary to multiply the 20 million figure by seven, eight or more.

The truth is that this legislation is opening the door to 200 million people, the vast majority of whom are uneducated, unskilled, non-English speakers, with no love or loyalty for the United States.

Our entire population is only 300 million! What could the Senate be thinking?

Why isn’t this true number being used in the debates? Why would anybody wish to import a huge, permanent underclass of uneducated, unskilled people when our government seems incapable of helping Americans who are stuck at the bottom rung of the opportunity ladder?

Senate Democratic and Republican leaders announced on Thursday that they had agreed on a way to revive a comprehensive immigration bill that was pulled off the Senate floor seven days ago.

The majority leader, Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, and the minority leader, Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, said they expected the bill to return to the floor before the Fourth of July recess.

Under the agreement reached on Thursday, the Senate will consider about 22 amendments, half from Republicans and half from Democrats.

Earlier in the day, trying to start the bill moving again in the Senate, Mr. Bush called for an immediate burst of $4.4 billion in spending to show that the government was committed to “securing this border once and for all.”

Senator Johnny Isakson, Republican of Georgia, described the call for $4.4 billion as “a good start.” But Mr. Isakson said Mr. Bush needed to do more to secure the border and to show that he was serious about enforcing immigration laws.

The move to offer the “downpayment of blood money” on border and interior enforcement is nothing more than a lame attempt to quell a revolt by Americans bombarding senators with angry phone calls, e-mails and faxes. Our message: We’ve got no faith that you’ll actually enforce the law or increase border security.

Some conservative critics of the bill, however, fumed that the $4.4 billion is little more than a way to buy votes. “This is a blatant attempt by senators to extort votes so they can fast-track an amnesty plan,” said Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Calif., chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus.

And comments by RINO senators on Thursday suggested that they were feeling the heat from conservative critics of the bill, who object to provisions offering legal status. The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”

Huh? What does “we have to deal with that problem” mean, Heir Lott? Are you making a threat here? Do you dare raise the ire even further of conservative talk radio and the conservative blogosphere?

At some point, Mr. Lott said from his Gestapo Headquarters, Senate Republican leaders may try to rein in “younger guys who are huffing and puffing against the bill.” No, Comrade Lott, we’re huffing and puffing about this ugly Trojan Horse you keep demanding we let in the gate. Dummy.

Is extortion an impeachable offense?

A senior citizens’ group issued a study estimating more than 2 million illegal immigrants could gain nearly $1 trillion in Social Security benefits by 2040 if the bill becomes law. “We’re unequivocally certain that it’s going to have a devastating effect on the solvency of Social Security, which is already estimated to go bankrupt in 2041,” said Shannon Benton, executive director of TREA Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan advocacy group that claims a membership of 1.2 million people.

Everything about this bill stunk before, and these bribes merely make the “new and improved” bill stink that much worse. Washington, are you even listening to the voters anymore?

So here’s my suggestion:

1. Build a wide, deep moat along the entire US-Mexico border.
2. Pump out all the water around New Orleans and use it to fill up the US-Mexico moat. Use all that dirt form digging the moat to raise all of New Orleans around three feet, and raise all the levies another ten feet.
