Each year, the Georgia Child Fatality Review Panel publishes a report detailing the circumstances of death for children in Georgia. Their findings (.pdf) for 2005:
Medical – 68.9%
Motor Vehicle – 8.9%
SIDS – 7.3%
Homicide – 2.9%
Other Injury – 2.4%
Drowning – 2.2%
Unknown – 1.7%
Asphyxia – 1.7%
Suicide – 1.4%
Fire – 0.8%
Poison – 0.8%
Unknown Intent – 0.5%
Other SIDS – 0.4%
Firearm – 0.2%
While every child death is a tragedy, the evidence once again points out that a bathtub, plastic shopping bag, or a bottle of bleach in the home is more of a danger to a child than a firearm.
