My rantings and ravings in this interesting world.

The Hockey Mom And The Pit Bull

As reported by William Kristol at The Weekly Standard:

A nervous young McCain staffer took it upon himself to explain to Palin the facts of life in a national campaign, the intense scrutiny she’d be under from the media, the viciousness of the assault that she’d be facing, etc.:

Palin: “Thanks for the warning. By the way, do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?”

McCain aide: “No, Governor.”

Palin: “A hockey mom wears lipstick.”

Continues William Kristol:

A spectre is haunting the liberal elites of New York and Washington–the spectre of a young, attractive, unapologetic conservatism, rising out of the American countryside, free of the taint (fair or unfair) of the Bush administration and the recent Republican Congress, able to invigorate a McCain administration and to govern beyond it.

That spectre has a name–Sarah Palin, the 44-year-old governor of Alaska chosen by John McCain on Friday to be his running mate. There she is: a working woman who’s a proud wife and mother; a traditionalist in important matters who’s broken through all kinds of barriers; a reformer who’s a Republican; a challenger of a corrupt good-old-boy establishment who’s a conservative; a successful woman whose life is unapologetically grounded in religious belief; a lady who’s a leader.

So what we will see in the next days and weeks–what we have already seen in the hours after her nomination–is an effort by all the powers of the old liberalism, both in the Democratic party and the mainstream media, to exorcise this spectre. They will ridicule her and patronize her. They will distort her words and caricature her biography. They will appeal, sometimes explicitly, to anti-small town and anti-religious prejudice. All of this will be in the cause of trying to prevent the American people from arriving at their own judgment of Sarah Palin.

But the “I feel your pain” Looney Left is already sharpening their fangs to get at her blood. Notes Michele Catalano:

The most vicious of the accusations flying at Palin have come from the brain trust known as Daily Kos: those that her fifth child, Trig, was not really hers, but Bristol’s. There were claims of “proof” including pictures of Palin looking decidedly unpregnant after announcing her pregnancy; one of those pictures was posted on Flickr, with the date stating the photo was taken in March 2005. Quick research shows that the camera used to take the photo did not even hit the market until fall of 2005. Nice try. The rest of the proof is nothing more than speculation, circumstantial evidence, and wishful thinking.

It appears that some circles have been so desperate to destroy Palin that they are eager to drag her teenage daughter and her special needs son through the mud in order to get at her. Classy.

For every person who debunked the story, the Kos crowd came up with more and more unreal proof of their claim. Let’s suppose for a minute that this turns out to be true; couldn’t that possibly be looked at as an honorable thing to do, to raise a handicapped baby as your own in order to save your daughter from a burden she is probably not yet ready to handle? Oh, I’m sure if this was a liberal woman, she’d be applauded for her valor.

And now we hear that Sarah’s oldest daughter, 17-year old Bristol, is pregnant by her boyfriend. Says Sarah, “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that, as parents, we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support. Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family.”

What would the response be if Barack Obama and his wife Michelle had a pregnant unmarried teenage daughter? “Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he has recently said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.”

Sarah celebrates life no matter how it appears. She even decided to continue her own pregnancy after learning that her child would be born with Down’s Syndrome. Barack refers to an unplanned or unwanted child as “punishment”, a “terrible thing” that “just happens” to “good people.”

Just one more reason I’m supporting McCain-Palin and not Obama-Biden.
