Those of you in Georgia probably realize that on July 1 House Bill 89 takes effect, allowing the legal carry of firearm by a licensed individual on public transportation, including MARTA.
You may also remember reading that:
Meeting at MARTA headquarters at Lindbergh Station, the board also heard a presentation from MARTA police on how they intend to deal with the new law allowing licensed gun owners to carry their firearms on MARTA. One concern was the MARTA station at Hartsfield-Jackson airport.
MARTA police plan to ask passengers with visible guns to conceal them. They will ask the public not to approach fellow passengers with guns, but to contact MARTA police.
It has now come to this blogger’s attention the following: According to a MARTA police lieutenant (which is a supervisory position), you should be prepared to be detained if you are carrying a firearm. You will be, according to the lieutenant, stopped, disarmed, and handcuffed. He did state that you will be eventually released to continue your journey if it turns out you have a Georgia firearms license.
- Rest assured that GeorgiaCarry.Org will not take this lying down, especially with regards to search and seizure laws.
- This is a typical government over-reaction to the passage of HB 89.
- Make very sure that your conduct is legal when on MARTA.
- Carefully research Georgia’s public gathering law and make sure you are not in violation when on mass transit.
- Much of where MARTA goes consists of places where it is illegal to carry a firearm. It would not surprise me if MARTA police informed local authorities of a passenger inbound to their location that is carrying a firearm.
- At least one officer is planning to make your day a bad one. Please do not help him.

Well, looks like us GCO members have our work cut out for us, by getting ride of that wreched public gathering clause.

I took the time and emailed CCT, which gave a one line vague response, which was no response at all.
From Rebecca Gutowsky, Transit Division Manager,
“Cobb County is aware of HB89 and will advise CCT if any policy changes are suggested.”
Can’t get any vague than that.
