National “Exercise Your Rights” Day

August 28th, 2007 · 2 Comments

In honor of the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “March on Washington” for civil rights, this blog is joining with other gun rights groups to declare today, August 28, “National Exercise Your Rights Day.”

From FirearmsCoalition.org:

Reverend Jesse Jackson is calling on citizens to exercise their First Amendment rights by participating in anti-gun/anti-violence protest marches in 25 cities nationwide on that day. The Firearms Coalition echoes that call to supporters of the Second Amendment, encouraging them to exercise their rights by purchasing a firearm or ammunition on August 28.

“We have the right to live safe and secure, no matter where we live in America,” Rev. Jackson said during a prayer vigil at Chuck’s Gun Shop in a Chicago suburb.

“That’s absolutely right” said Jay Knox, Executive Director of The Firearms Coalition, “Mr. Jackson has made a valid point and we believe the best way to ensure that safety and security is for responsible citizens to have the means to defend themselves. The idea that all violence is bad is simply incorrect. Violence is sometimes the only way to stop evil and brutality. When used in this way, violence is an agent of good.” said Mrs. Knox

“Gunowners trust our fellow citizens and have no fear of them having the means to effectively engage in righteous violence when necessary. Martin Luther King preached and practiced non-violence, but he did so with armed Deacons around him and a loaded pistol in his pocket. It seems that Dr. King understood that the rights to arms and self defense are basic civil rights and were an integral part of the civil rights battle he waged.”

Mrs. Knox went on, “While Jesse Jackson and his followers are out exercising their rights to assembly and to petition the government, calling for more restrictions on firearms purchasers, gunowners should be exercising their First and Second Amendment rights, buying that new gun, stocking up on ammo, and sending a message to their elected representatives that attempts to further restrict gun ownership will not be tolerated.”

Rev. Jesse Jackson is organizing an anti-gun protest in up to 25 cities nationwide. Not willing to lay the blame for crime on criminals, Jackson and his cronies claim, “people who buy guns from gun shops kill people.” I wonder if he were to dare to say, “people who buy automobiles from automobile dealers kill people”?

Since the sale of every firearm from every licensed gun dealer is subject to a background check, it is unclear how the millions of law-abiding Americans who go through this mandated check and legally “buy guns from gun shops” are responsible for killing people. Then again, though, neither the Reverend Jackson or the Leftist Media are ever ones to let the facts get in the way of a misguided photo opportunity.

Yep, another 100 rounds of 9mm will be purchased by me today for my concealed handgun that I have with me everywhere I go.

August 28

And YES, I still have my eye on a semi-automatic AK-47.

And don’t forget about National Ammo Day, November 19, 2007.

I’ve tried out a Sig Sauer P226 9mm, and I really liked it. Is 9mm a good place to start for a home/personal defense weapon?

9mm is the minimum I’d go for personal defense. Lots of available ammunition types and gun types for this caliber. And with good shot placement you can “encourage” the bad guy to leave you alone.

For personal defense you want the largest caliber you can repeatedly keep on target at 10 yards. Some of that will be based on the size of the bullet, but some will be based on the quality of the gun. The other side of the equation is that the largest and best gun in the world won’t do you a bit of good if it’s home locked in your nightstand when you need it in a dark parking lot.

For me 9mm is also the largest I can go for concealed carry. The .45s and .40s, and the .38s and .357s, are just too large to effectively conceal in my front pocket of my dress slacks. But if concealed carry is not an option for you then I haven’t found the recoil of the larger calibers to be that much different from 9mm, at least not in quality handguns. My son carries a Glock 23 in .40 inside his waistband.

I carry a Kel-Tec PF-9 in 9mm. You can see one at “http://www.kel-tec-cnc.com/pf9.html”. It’s just about as small a 9mm as you’re going to find. The downside is that because it’s so small and light it has a tendency to kick a bit.

The SIG P226 is supposed to be a fantastic pistol. It’s just a wee bit outside this poor man’s wallet size. :-)

For –home– defense I do not use a pistol. I use a Remington 870 shotgun.

    Just my 2¢
