A Tale Of Two Players

A ZERO
Barry Bonds Barry Bonds hits 755th home run, ties Hank Aaron’s record.

With a short swing, a half stare and an emphatic clap of his hands, Barry Bonds rounded the bases. After so many days and so many tries, he had finally caught Hammerin’ Hank.

No. 755 was a strong shot for all the doubters, an opposite-field drive of 382 feet to left-center, moving Bonds within one swing of having baseball’s pinnacle of power all to himself. It came on a 2-1, 91 mph fastball.

A HERO
Tom Glavine Tom Glavine joined pitching’s most prestigious club with a vintage performance, changing speeds and fooling hitters in the manner that made him one of baseball’s best.

The stylish left-hander earned his 300th victory Sunday night with nervous family and friends looking on from near the Mets’ dugout on the first-base side.

Glavine (10-6) became the 23rd pitcher with 300 victories, the first since former teammate Greg Maddux reached the milestone in 2004 while with the Cubs. The 41-year-old Glavine, only the fifth lefty to win 300.

The difference between Barry Bonds and Tom Glavine is that Glavine recorded 300 pitching victories using only his own God-given talent, while Bonds received assistance from a synthetic designer steroid called Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) and provided by the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO). It is structurally close to trenbolone, a steroid used by U.S. cattle ranchers to bulk up their herds. It is classified as a controlled substance, like morphine and amphetamines.

Until Major League Baseball can come to terms with their blatant steroid use I have no desire to watch the game. College football is just around the corner, so the Boys Of October will have to find themselves a new fan.
