For Presidential election loser Al Gore has made a name for himself as the current High Priest of Global Warming. When it was made known that Gore spent just under $1,200 each month in electricity for one of his homes, he excused his enormous energy usage by stating he’s using “carbon offsets” to reduce his “carbon footprint”.
But according to The Tennessean:
Gore helped found Generation Investment Management, through which he and others pay for offsets. The firm invests the money in solar, wind and other projects that reduce energy consumption around the globe, she said.
OK, so let me get this straight:
- Gore wants to reduce his “carbon footprint” by purchasing “offsets”, ostensibly to look more like a true global warming disciple, as evidence that he lives a “carbon-neutral” lifestyle.
- A carbon offset is a service that tries to reduce the net carbon emissions of individuals or organizations indirectly, through proxies who reduce their emissions and/or increase their absorption of greenhouse gases.
- So he founds an offset company.
- Every time he buys an offset from his company his company makes a profit.
- Since it’s at least partly his company, every time his company makes a profit he receives some income.
- Therefore every time he purchases an offset from his company he’s actually paying himself money. He “buys” his “carbon offsets” from himself, through a transaction designed to boost his own investments and return a profit to himself.
- However, the actual amount of carbon reduction (if any) from an offset project is difficult to measure, largely unregulated, and vulnerable to misrepresentation. So after all this sleight-of-hand by Gore there is still no evidence that he’s making any appreciable carbon use reduction at all.
- And the more he trumpets the cry of global warming the more business he’s going to create for his offset company … and more income in his wallet.
