Venezuelan police detained a university student outside the U.S. Embassy on Monday, saying he left two low-intensity explosives [pipe bombs] on the street outside the diplomatic mission. No one was hurt, and the student’s motives remained unclear.
Police set off the homemade devices — essentially large fireworks — while they closed the street to traffic outside the embassy. Children were evacuated from an adjacent school.
Wilfredo Borraz, police chief for the Baruta section of Caracas, told reporters that one of the explosives was found outside the school and one inside a planter about 50 meters (yards) from the embassy entrance.
He said both were in black plastic bags and contained “small fliers with publicity alluding to Hezbollah” — the Lebanese guerrilla group.
“The idea was apparently to create alarm and publicize a message,” Borraz told reporters, saying the explosives were made to draw attention while scattering the pamphlets.

More than 200 Americans on the public payroll have been convicted of taking bribes from narcotics smugglers or illegal immigrant traffickers during the past two years, according to a wide-ranging probe by the Los Angeles Times.
The disturbing figure is double that of prior accounts and it appears thousands more officials are under investigation for being on the take along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The list of officials involve Border Patrol agents, local police, a county sheriff, motor vehicle clerks and an FBI supervisor. Others include immigration examiners, prison guards, school district officials and uniformed personnel of every branch of the U.S. military.
The vast majority of these officials have pleaded guilty or been convicted of taking bribes from Mexican criminal networks, which the Times notes can afford lavish payoffs with bribery payments topping the $1 million mark.
“So what” you say? Maybe you would even take that $1 million in blood money.

Have you forgotten that Arab Muslims have been found crossing our border with Mexico by the hundreds, and that at least one had a Hezbollah patch?
Do you care if, in three years, your child’s school bus is blown up by a Hezbollah terrorist that simply walked across the US-Mexico border, someone from Arabia and trained in Hugo Chavez‘s Venezuela? If this did happen would you be angry with me if I said, “So what?”
