From al-Reuters:
The European Union does not intend to place Hezbollah on its list of terrorist organisations for the time being, EU President Finland said on Tuesday.
“Given the senstitive situtaion, I don’t think this is something we will be acting on now,” Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, told a news conference following an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
Tuomioja’s comments were in response to a letter signed by 213 members of the United States Congress sent to EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana asking that the EU add Hezbollah to its terrorist list.
Well isn’t this just wonderful.
According to Wikipedia:
Hezbollah, a terrorist organization, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians, was inspired by the success of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. It was formed by the Ayatollah Khomeini’s followers in the early eighties to spread Shia revolution.
But throughout most of the Arab and Muslim worlds, Hezbollah is highly regarded as a legitimate resistance movement. Hezbollah, through financial funding by Iran, has an extensive social development program, with hospitals, news services, and educational facilities. Oil dollars from Iran are helping Hezbollah build a dependent welfare state within Lebanon (the Moonbat Left in the US can only dream of such successes). For example medical care is cheaper in a Hezbollah-run hospital than in most of the country’s private hospitals, and it’s free for Hezbollah members. Club membership has its advantages.
The United States, Canada and Israel consider Hezbollah a terrorist organization, claiming that the organization initiates attacks against civilians and ideologically supports such attacks by other similar organizations. The United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands officially list only the External Security Organization of Hezballah (ESO) as “bad guys”. Russia does not consider Hezbollah as a terrorist organization at all.
So what is terrorism? There are many interpretations of the idea behind terrorism, but I believe most sane people would agree that the political use of violent force and weapons that deliberately target or involve civilians, and do not focus mainly on military or government targets, is a terrorist tactic. Also most legitimate governments and military leaders do not attempt to use civilians as shields or aim at them during times of political conflict. Therefore Hezbollah, being proven guilty of both of these offences, is a terrorist organization no matter how much free medicine they pass out in southern Lebanon.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines terrorism as “a policy intended to strike with terror those against whom it is adopted; the employment of methods of intimidation.”
Webster’s New International Dictionary defines terrorism as “A mode of governing, or of opposing government, by intimidation.”
The American Heritage Dictionary defines terrorism as “The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments.”
Once again Hezbollah is guilty as charged of being a terrorist organization.
So why is it so difficult for the EU to make the public claim that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization? That’s both simple and expected: with Europe becomming more and more Muslim, the EU doesn’t want to anger its new population by referring to Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. Otherwise a bomb might go off in a subway, or riots may break out in the suburbs, or a car bomb may go off in front of a busy marketplace.
Or to put it another way:
- The EU is simply wanting to survive while under the threat of destruction.
- Self-preservation.
- Appeasement.
- Peace for our time.
- Pacifism.
- Neville Chamberlain and the Munich Agreement with Adolf Hitler in 1938.
- Accepting the imposed conditions of an aggressor in lieu of armed resistance.
- Concessions at the sacrifice of principles.
