Election Primary In Georgia

Trackbacked at basil’s blog:

Today, July 18, is Primary Election Day in Georgia. Today we select who will become the Democrat and Republican candidates for the fall General Election.

Last year sometime, probably under the cover of darkness, the federal government re-drew the District lines of the House of Representatives. It went into effect January 1 of this year. Georgia’s 4th Congressional District used to contain only DeKalb County, but after the re-draw it now also includes Rockdale County – and is currently represented in Congress by our cute little Socialist Cynthia McKinney.

4th district DeKalb County:
- has around 680,000 residents
- 54.23% Black, 35.82% White
- median household income of $49,117
- 10.80% of the population were below the poverty line
- traditionally a “blue” county, usually voting for Democrats/Liberals

Rockdale County:
- has around 80,000 residents
- 75.74% White, 18.22% Black
- median household income of $60,065
- 8.20% of the population were below the poverty line
- traditionally a “red” county, usually voting for Republicans/Conservatives

Very different counties. Very different demographics. Very different voting histories. But not any more.

In order to “dilute” the conservative vote in Georgia some liberal in Washington decided to include Rockdale County with DeKalb County in Georgia’s 4th Congressional District. There was no notice. There were no announcements. In fact many residents didn’t even know McKinney was their Representative until they saw a copy of the ballot in last week’s local newspaper.

And the huge Democrat+Liberal+Black vote coming out of DeKalb is more than enough to “erase” tiny Rockdale’s Republican+Conservative+White vote.

4th district So today, for the very first time, Rockdale residents are discovering that Socialist Cynthia McKinney is their voice in Washington. Even if every single resident of Rockdale were to vote against McKinney she can still cruise to victory with her mindless minions in DeKalb “more government, more welfare” County.

It was with blind hope today that I voted in the Democratic Primary, even though I’m a Conservative, to try and oust McKinney. Will my vote count? WIll my vote matter? Should I move? I’ll let you know tomorrow when the votes are counted.

Nevertheless it’s a sad day for Rockdale County. And for me.
