Mike Luckovich is the editorial cartoonist at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He is an avowed Liberal, and he detests practically everything about the War On Terror. He’s a proud “progressive”. |
His cartoon for June 22, called “Pot To Kettle”:

From what I gather from his “statement” the behaviors of al Qaeda terrorists to their captives is equal to the behaviors of the US military to their captives.
For those of you that haven’t been paying attention let’s review a recent “behavior” of al Qaeda. They tortured and murdered our two soldiers. Pfc. Kristian Menchaca and Pfc. Thomas L. Tucker never had a chance once they fell into the jihadists’ savage hands. They were castrated while alive, and then had their genitals stuffed down their throats. Their arms were contorted. Their eyes were gouged. They were then split open, and at least one had their head chopped off. Finally booby-trap bombs were placed on their newly dead bodies so that their rescuers would be killed too.
Ask any of those Abu Ghraib detainees how they felt about having panties put on their heads and then ask Nick Berg how he felt about having his head sawed off while he was screaming and gurgling. The fact that there are people out there who truly believe these actions are equivalent, equal in force, amount, or value, is sad.
A dozen US Marines out of 130,000 stick underwear on the heads of terrorist prisoners and strip them naked and let dogs bark at them, and al Qaeda barbarians slice of the heads and rip up the bodies of 2 US Marines and there you have it! Moral Equivalence.
Fruit Loops for breakfast or having eyes gouged out and beheaded? Hmmm, now which is torture?
Perhaps now maybe the owners of Atlanta Journal-Constitution might begin to understand why their subscription base is dropping about 10% a year. Any paper that would print a cartoon this distasteful about the very people defending their right to publish your liberal garbage doesn’t deserve to stay in business.
There is no moral equivalency between 30 years of global Islamofascist homicidal behavior and the behavior of, at best, a miniscule handful of American troops. Unless you’re a Liberal
By the way, Mr. Progressive, how many terrorists have been killed and mutilated while in US custody? How many US soldiers have been killed and mutilated after being kidnapped by the terrorists?
This cartoon is not about Iraq, but about comparing American soldiers to al Qaeda, which is a sad commentary about the Left. But it should open your eyes to just how much Leftists hate America and American soldiers. You would expect to see this cartoon in an Islamist propaganda newspaper like al Jazeera. That you see it here merely shows the Moral Equivalence between the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and al Jazeera.
It is not the policy of the U.S. military to torture enemy combatants, certainly not to the point that DNA tests become necessary to determine which disfigured corpse is which. It is not the policy of the U.S. military to behead captured enemies. Water-boarding and sleep deprivation strike us as bad and likely unproductive policies. Disfiguring torture and beheading strike us as the acts of barbarians and monsters. There is equivalence in this?
Whatever one’s judgment about the legal rights of enemy combatants held at Guantanamo, drawing parallels between isolated American excesses in a cruel war and such joyously celebrated “policies” of terrorists is just beyond the pale.
And I keep hearing about the Geneva Convention. What about it, exactly?
- Al Qaeda is an international terrorist network rather than a nation. It has no general or presumed claim on the treaty’s protections.
- The Geneva Convention provisions call for membership in a regular military force which carries its arms openly. It does not include the hijacking of civilian aircraft, hidden roadside bombs, or high explosives concealed in vans burrowed in underground garages.
- The provisions call for wearing uniforms in order to distinguish members as authentic soldiers. Al Qaeda’s jihadists dress and conduct themselves ostensibly as civilians.
- The provisions call for treating captured enemy soldiers with the dignity and respect accorded to honorable prisoners of war: accounting for them, keeping them safe, allowing the International Committee of the Red Cross access to ensure their proper treatment. Al Qaeda tortures and slaughters them, and then plays the videotapes of the executions across the world.
- al Qaeda doesn’t much care about the Geneva Conventions or international law. They only follow the verdict of the Islamic court - and sometimes their “own” court.
The cartoon also speaks to the hypocrisy of the mainstream media. It’s obvious that the same editors that refused to print, so as not to offend, those lame and insipid Mohammed cartoons had no problem running this illogical and offensive anti-American smear. The same hypocritcal editors will defend this cartoon as freedom of speech. Draw your own conclusions about the biases and agendas that the MSM operates under.
The murders of Pfcs. Kristian Menchaca and Thomas Tucker weren’t retribution. They weren’t “equivalent” to anything. They are disgusting acts of barbarism. To claim equivalence is just as barbaric.
Today would be a great day for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to lose another 10% of their subscription base.

Outstanding Rant my friend. And a wonderful way to toss facts in the face of the “Geneva” crowd.

The castration/dick in the mouth/blinding combo is not only barbaric, it’s unoriginal. The Contras were doing it two decades ago. But that was in defence of freedom, so that’s OK. That’s right, ain’t it Ollie? Ollie?
