OK, the MSM has almost entirely missed this - but I have only seen it on one blog. The recent murder of a secularist judge has finally caused both Moslem and non-Moslem people to protest in the streets gainst the Islamist (as opposed to Islamic) posture of the government — in one Reuters report (since archived, but the link below is still active as of this writing) as many as fifty thousand in the capitol.
In even worse news for the Islamists, the Army is making noise about their fairly recent pledge to refrain from politics. The military has previuosly ousted at least three governments deemed to be betraying the principles of tolerance and openess promoted by Attaturk. Note that, almost unique for military overthrows, the Turkish military refused in both instances to keep power but instead held elections with only civilian candidates…

Ozkok’s call was seen as a warning to the government from the army, which helped topple an Islamist-leaning government in 1997, and follows comments in leading papers that the government should learn lessons from the mass pro-secular protests.
Ismet Berkan, editor in chief of the respected liberal daily, Radikal, wrote on Saturday that “Turkey is heading towards a very dangerous political polarisation. The government had better consider the situation calmly”.
Secularists accuse the AKP of having a hidden Islamist agenda and cite recent attempts to restrict alcohol consumption and ease restrictions on religious education. The AKP denies it.
