Common Folk Using Common Sense

My rantings and ravings in this interesting world.

Nothing To See Here - Move Along

I’m in a grumpy mood today. I have Cervical Spondylosis, a disorder caused by abnormal wear on the cartilage and bones of the neck with degeneration and mineral deposits in the cushions between the vertebrae. In layman’s terms: IT HURTS LIKE HELL. Today is one of the days that the medications aren’t working, so I’m just a grumpy old man today. You want sunshine and butterflies? Go somewhere else today.

I was almost involved in three different automobile accidents over the weekend. At two different intersections, and at two different times, someone blew through, out-of-turn, at a 4-way stop, almost taking out me and my poor old truck. And then another genius pulled into my lane out of a parking lot without looking first, again almost taking out me and my poor old truck. All three were women. Go figure.

Nagin got re-elected mayor of New Orleans. This is the same guy that left buses in parking lots instead of evacuating flood victims. Pure incompetence. But he’s black and he’s liberal, and apparently that’s exactly all that’s needed for whatever residents remain in New Orleans to be a mayor. The people had a chance and they voted their will. They now deserve whatever they receive from their leadership. Do not ask me for any more help if another hurricane hits.

More on New Orleans: US Representative William Jefferson, D-La., already under investigation for bribery, was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded. The $100 bills in the suitcase from the FBI had the same serial numbers as those found in Jefferson’s freezer at his home. Two of Jefferson’s associates have already pleaded guilty to bribery-related charges in federal court. But the Justice Department and FBI agents are also looking at “least seven other schemes in which Congressman Jefferson sought things of value” in return for official acts. Jefferson’s lawyer, Robert Trout, contended that the prosecutors’ disclosure was “part of a public relations agenda and an attempt to embarrass Congressman Jefferson. Uh, yeah, being caught on both videotape and audio tape accepting a $100,000 bribe is very embarrasing. This was the same elected representative that used the National Guard to secure his home in New Orleans during the Katrina aftermath. Hey New Orleans: you elected him, you get what you wanted.

Barry Bonds hit as many homeruns as Babe Ruth did. But if I were paid a gazillion dollars, had the very best personal trainers and sports medicine specialists at my fingertips, and abused steriods, I could probably hit a lot of homeruns too. If there isn’t an asterisk beside every one of his records then baseball is ruined. He is no sports hero to me.

Roughly 10% of Mexico’s population of about 107 million is now living in the United States, estimates show. About 15% of Mexico’s labor force is working in the United States. One in every 7 Mexican workers migrates to the United States. Can we call this an invasion yet?

The “non-Muslims in Iran must wear identifying clothing” story I mentioned below may not be true. Several experts are casting doubt on reports that Iran had passed a law requiring the country’s Jews and other religious minorities to wear coloured badges identifying them as non-Muslims. The Iranian embassy in Otttawa also denied the Iranian government had passed such a law. The Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations has issued a statement expressing concern — but they can’t confirm the story either. The State Department hasn’t been able to confirm the story yet. The National Post has a new article up by Chris Wattie retreating from the original report. The original story has been removed from Canada.com.

The GOP caved-in on ANWR. The GOP wimped out on offshore drilling. This is what the Democrats have been doing for years, but it surprised me to see the Republicans run away like scared little girls. POP QUIZ: When was the last time a gasoline refinery was built in the US? And for EXTRA CREDIT tell me how many more automobiles are on the road since the last time a gasoline refinery was built in the US. If gasoline prices keep increasing I want you to know who to blame - and vote out of office.

Wonkette, and others, thought it funny to pick on Michelle Malkin. Sure enough Michelle knows how to dish out some strong words against those to whom she disagrees, and as such she becomes the target of retaliation. But the whole “Asian whore being able to propel ping pong balls out of herself”, like a cheap hooker doing a stage performance at a run-down Thailand brothel, is offensive and racist - double so coming from those that publically denounce offensiveness and racism. It was a cheap shot, not any sort of witty discourse, and well below that of a serious blogger; more like a 6-grade student at recess. Surber didn’t think it was any big deal; I disagree.
