Crowds of people and their pets came out last week to the official opening of Midland’s (Texas) first dog park. After a brief ceremony, dogs and their owners grazed the grass of the small and large dog open-leash parks.
The dog park, adjacent to the Bill Williams Sports Complex at Hogan Park, has been a project the city has worked on since 2001.
Authorities have said the estimated pre-construction cost of the dog park is about $35,000. Sections throughout the parks are designated as “doggie potty stations” where owners can properly dispose of waste in bags provided onsite.
About 75 acknowledgment bricks have been sold, with space for a total of 400, city authorities said. The bricks are available for $30 each or four for $100 and their proceeds will go towards the purchasing of amenities for the dog park.
The dog park is divided into two sections for both little and big dogs to enjoy. Dogs weighing less than 30 pounds can enjoy the 1.5 acre small dog park while large dogs can venture across the 3.5 acre dog park designated for them. Both sections of the parks are secured with fences and have water fountains.
The advantage the dog park offers to the dogs is that it’s a place to “let the dogs just run and do what they want to do,” David Bradley, owner of two golden retrievers, said.
