Moussaoui To Prison For Life

Trackbacked at Hot Air:

U.S. Judge Leonie Brinkema sent Zacarias Moussaoui to prison for life Thursday, to “die with a whimper,” for his role in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Publicly blasting the United States one last time, al Qaeda terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui was formally sentenced to life in prison Thursday for his role in the September 11 attacks: “God save Osama bin Laden - you will never get him.”

moussaouiBrinkema and the unrepentant Moussaoui capped the two-month trial with an intense exchange that will mark the defendant’s last public words before his incarceration in a maximum security prison in Colorado.

Legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said Moussaoui most likely will be locked up inside the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, which is sometimes known as the “Alcatraz in the Rockies.” “It is a place of extraordinary security, 23 hours a day in cells, one hour of recreation,” Toobin said. “It is as close to permanent solitary confinement as exists in our prison system.”

A day earlier, a jury rejected the government’s case to have Moussaoui executed, deciding instead to should spend life in prison with no chance of parole. Not all jurors were convinced that Moussaoui, who was in jail on immigration charges Sept. 11, had a significant part in the attacks, despite his boastful claims that he did.

Brinkema sentenced Moussaoui to six life terms without the chance of parole, with two terms to be served consecutively.

It is not known how many jurors wanted Moussaoui sentenced to life and how many wanted a death sentence. Under federal law, a defendant automatically receives life in prison when a jury is split. The 42-page verdict form gives no indication on how, or if, the jury split.

It’s over. For now.

Did I want him executed? Yes. Painfully. This whole thing should have been in a military court, and Moussaoui’s last vision should have been that of the firing squad blasting away at him.

But the civilian court decided on six life terms without the chance of parole. I’ll be OK with that, I guess. But if I see some media-hungry lawyer try to free him on some technicality then I’ll get really angry.

French authorities said Thursday they may eventually press the United States to have Moussaoui serve his life sentence in France under two conventions on the transfer of convicts. They were waiting to hear the conditions of his sentencing. I do NOT want France to get him - they will let him go.

Just put him in his hole. Only one hour of sunlight per day. No book deals. No movie deals. No visitors. Make it so his last breath is taken inside his cell. Let this pig rot. If God loves Moussaoui, then that’s God’s decision. I want him to die alone, lonely, with a thousand demons haunting him for the rest of his days. I have no grace for this sub-human.

Now let’s get the rest of them.

I think the punishment was fitting. What better way to punish someone than to take away their greatest desire? In this case it’s being martyred for their cause? I’m pretty sure Moussaui wanted that all along.

Also, as a Christian, I can sympathize with your feelings about this terrorist; but it is hardly an attitude to have. We should not hold hatred for these people, rather we should hold hatred for what they do. As Christ forgave us, so we should learn to forgive others.

Granted, we SHOULD punish these people and defend ourselves from future attacks–but how is calling for their blood making us any better than the terrorists?

By the way, I realize that’s more of a strech, since you were OKAY with the life sentence, I was just saying…
