Ray Nagin May Be Losing His “Chocolate City”

Remember when New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin promised that New Orleans will be a “chocolate” city again?

It’s time for us to come together. It’s time for us to rebuild New Orleans _ the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans,” the mayor said. “This city will be a majority African American city. It’s the way God wants it to be. You can’t have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn’t be New Orleans.

He may be in for a bit of a surprise when he finds “his” city to be a few shades lighter in color. From the Washington Times:

An Alabama employment agency that sent 70 laborers and construction workers to job sites in that state in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina says the men were sent home after just two weeks on the job by employers who told them “the Mexicans had arrived” and were willing to work for less.

Linda Swope, who operates Complete Employment Services Inc. in Mobile, Ala., told The Washington Times last week that the workers — whom she described as U.S. citizens, residents of Alabama and predominantly black — had been “urgently requested” by contractors hired to rebuild and clear devastated areas of the state, but were told to leave three job sites when the foreign workers showed up.

The Gulf Coast Latin American Association noted in a report that whether those workers will remain after the cleanup work is completed is not clear, but the longer those jobs last, the more likely it is that the workers will settle permanently. After Hurricane Andrew hit southeastern Florida in 1992, the association said, the construction boom attracted large numbers of Hispanic immigrants to several areas, including Homestead, Fla., where the Latino population doubled during the 1990s.

Oh this ought to make for some powerful politics. One minority against another. One politician decrying racism against another. One resident claiming this to be “their” city over the demands of another.

The Democrats have always said that they’re the party of black America. Yet for the last two days the Democrats have been stumbling over each other trying to get time in front of the cameras describing how they’re the voice of Mexican illegals. Hillary Clinton said, “Your faces are the faces of America.” One of the nation’s fastest growing and most prized voting blocs is the nation’s 9.3 million Hispanic voters.

What will mayor Nagin do if New Orleans becomes a “caramel” city instead of a “chocolate” one?
